Paris Square Saigon

Paris Square Saigon

One of the best locations in Ho Chi Minh City for French buildings and architecture is Paris Square, located in the center of the city. Discover two of the grandest colonial buildings to be built in French Indochina – the Central Post Office and the Notre Dame Cathedral. During the French colonial era, this area was very much the commercial and administration center of the French city.

The cathedral was built between 1877 and 1880, allegedly over the site of a former city pagoda. Its twin spired construction is similar to the grandest churches that were built in Europe at that time and it still functions as a Catholic Cathedral today. The post office was built later during the 1880s. Its front facade is beautifully decorated with a combination of French style cornices and Khmer motifs. This building continues as the main post office of the city and inside there are some interesting reminders of the past. On the walls are plaques inscribing the names of important French citizens and a large map of former Indochina.

Find local workers gathering under the shade of towering trees while enjoying an al fresco lunch. And as the sun sets, watch street vendors, local traders file into the streets as church-goers head off to evening prayer. No matter the time of day, Paris Square is a perfect place to relax with a cold beer and a warm meal while the city passes by.
