Russian Market Phnom Penh

5 reviews

Russian market is located in the south part of Phnom Penh and is known to the locals as Phsar Toul Tom Poung. The reason why it is called Russian market is because it was a popular market among the Russian expats during the 1980s when most of the western expats in Phnom Penh were Russian.

Russian Market Phnom Penh

Russian Market in Phnom Penh

The Russian Market, also Phsar Toul Tom Pong in Khmer, which means “Market on a big hill”, received its name because during the 80’s, the majority of tourists were Russians. At that time Cambodia was occupied by communist Vietnamese troops just after they had liberated Cambodia from the Khmer rouge regime. The Cambodians themselves, still use the Khmer name for the market which they have been using for over 100 years, although nowadays the hill can no longer be seen. However tuk-tuk and mototaxi drivers will understand where to go, if you tell them the Russian Market. Back in the 1980’s you could buy hand guns, rifles and ammunition at the markets, as the war was basically over and these things were money makers at the Russian Market. After you bought a gun you could also purchase a suitable police or army uniform to go with it but the days of this sort of business are now over.

The area around the Russian Market Phnom Penh is not as busy as other market areas which makes it easy to cross streets and check out shops nearby. On the north side of the Russian Market is an ATM from ABA Bank and there is another one on the south side. On the east side is a branch of famous KFC fast food chain. As the Russian Market is well frequented by western tourists there are now a lot of shops and restaurants around the market which aim at westerners.

The inside of the Russian Market contains countless stalls and shops. In the center of the market are food stalls which freshly prepare inexpensive Cambodian meals. Once again if you have a weak stomach do not eat at local markets! The ingredients for these meals are all available fresh in the market as well. The Russian Market has a large section of fresh produce and the locals who live nearby purchase their food supplies here. You can see how meat is butchered and living fish are freshly prepared in the food section. Besides meat and fish, there is also fresh salad, vegetables and fruits to buy. The Russian Market has also a wide selection of spare parts of motorbikes.
