St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Hanoi

In the middle of the congested streets of Hanoi, the neo-Gothic facade of St. Joseph’s Cathedral (Nha Tho Lon) seems somewhat out of place with its ancient beauty. Outside the church looks seem very quaint with old limestone layers, moss on the wall, but when you take a big step over the door; visitors will witness a modern architecture that rarely changes with the time. Here are top activities that you never miss to make a more fascinating Northen Vietnam visit.

Located in the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi capital, fronting a small plaza near Hoan Kiem Lake, the Roman Catholic cathedral was built between 1882 and 1886; shortly after the French conquered the city that makes it becomes one of the earliest Western architecture in Hanoi. It was closed in 1975 upon reunification of Vietnam, and was not reopened until 1985.

The most striking characteristics of the building are its twin bell towers reminiscent of Notre Dame in Paris. The church has a Western set of bells including four small and one big bell, especially the huge clock nailed in the facade. The interior of the cathedral features stunning stained glass windows and an intricate alter where mass is held several times each day.

Visitors usually combine Hanoi City tour with one night stay on cruise in Halong Bay to gain many worthwhile and memorable experiences in this beautiful region. Click here to view a massive range of multi-day tours to Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa and Hoa Lu – Tam Coc in Ninh Binh.

Anyone travels to Hanoi around Christmas time will find the cathedral a bustle of activity, and the small plaza in the front takes on a street fair-like atmosphere. For visitors wanting to attend mass, there’s sometimes a schedule posted on the gates to the left of the building, and there’s usually at least one English-language mass on Sundays.
